The Youth Ministry at South Woods

The purpose of the student ministry at South Woods is to establish and ground our young people in the Word of God. We believe that God's Word is essential in showing us what we are to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of us. If we are to know anything about God, then we must look to what He has revealed about Himself in His specific revelation in Scripture. In the same way, if we are to know how this God expects us to live, then we must likewise look to His Word for answers.

There are various means by which we seek to grow our youth into mature thinkers and believers in Christ. The primary way we seek to build up our youth into the body of Christ is through the study of Scripture. It is the center of all we do at South Woods, and it is no less true in our youth ministry. We do this work in the following ways:

Sunday School: Sunday Schoolis an hour set aside every week for our youth to come together with those who teach them to work through the Bible systematically and learn what God has revealed through His Spirit. We go through the same passages as the adults, to better facilitate conversation through the week between parents and their children.

S.T.I.N.T. - Short Term Instruction in Nurturing and Training: In our Wednesday night youth S.T.I.N.T. classes, we rotate between studying the Baptist Catechism, Christian philosophy and apologetics, cultural issues, church history and Bible study.

FOCUS: Our FOCUS gatherings are a time when we will go through a Chrisitan book, usually a chapter a week, in order to learn from those who have gone before us and see how better to apply Scripture to our lives.

D-groups: D-groups are location based, discipleship groups that meet together to study the word, pray, and hold each other accountable

In all that we do, we seek to affect the youths' worldview, causing them to think about life, culture, art, friends, family, etc. through the lens of Scripture and their life in Christ.

Biblical study without fellowship, though, would be fruitless, because knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. We seek to model this example at South Woods. Therefore, we work to teach our youth Biblical fellowship as well as Biblical knowledge. To this end, there are a variety of events in which the youth participate, such as fellowships after church, bowling, frisbee, putt-putt, canoeing, as well as many more things that will occur in the future. A main event in which the youth participate each year is the Saved By Faith Youth Challenge (formerly, the Southern Baptist Founders Youth Conference), where they are challenged through preaching, teaching, and discipleship, as well as through fun physical activity.

We also desire for our youth to have a heart for taking the gospel to the world through missions. We offer differnt opportunities to serve others and share the gospel throughout the year, including a summer mission trip and opportunities for both local and international mission trips.
